What is Slovenia. First, it is not Slovakia, Slavonia, or Siberia. It is a small Balkan country wedged between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia. It also lies upon the shores of the Adriatic Sea. Its geographic location added to its access to the Mediterranean via the Adriatic Sea, has made it a cultural and trade crossroads. The major religion of the county is Catholicism.
Its population is only two million. Its main industries are motor vehicles, electric and electronic equipment, machinery, pharmaceuticals and fuels. Examples of major Slovenian companies operating in Slovenia include the home appliance manufacturer Gorenge and a manufacturing subsidiary of Renault.
Slovenia’s rulers during the millennia are encyclopedic in number. More recently it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for several hundred years. During World War I it was a battleground between Austro-Hungary and its enemy Italy, and Slovenia suffered drastically. After WW I, it was submerged into Yugoslavia together with Croatia, Bosnia, and Serbia. This multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multilingual country was not built to last. The Yugoslav civil war severed the tenuous ties that bound Yugoslavia together; Slovenia achieved independence for the first time in its history in 1991.
