20 May HILLARY CLINTON’S COUGH II
DO THE FORMER FIRST LADY’S RECURRENT COUGHING SPASMS
IMPERIL HER AMBITION TO BE AMERICA’S FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT?
Mrs. Clinton’s episodic cough became the stuff of scrutiny and speculation during her testimony before the Congressional Benghazi Committee hearings in October 2015. Amid her eleven-hour testimony, she broke out into a choking fit. A congressman asked whether she required a break to recover. Hillary Clinton declined, took a lozenge and continued her appearance. During the first months of 2016, inconvenient bouts of coughing recurred. On at least seven occasions, cough spasms have interrupted Clinton’s speeches/interviews during her 2016 presidential campaign.
The episodes in chronological sequence:
January 25, Iowa: During her first speech of the day, she experienced a spasm that lasted for more than a minute. She took a sip of water and reached for a throat lozenge. The former first lady blamed the cough on her busy campaign schedule. (2)
February 17, Harlem: The cough lasted more than a minute, was disruptive enough that the crowd began to chant, “Hillary, Hillary.” She implied that the cause was “too much to say.” (3)
March 6, Flint MI during televised debate with Bernie Sanders: As the debate ended, Hillary Clinton lapsed into another coughing spasm.
March 12, Ohio: A coughing fit mid speech.
April, New York during “Breakfast Club” radio interview: She attributed her problem to allergies (4)
April, Bridgeport CT: The candidate explained to the crowd, “I have been talking non-stop for weeks now.” (5)
May 5, California: Clinton coughed repeatedly during her speech as the crowd chanted her name in solidarity. (6)
Mrs. Clinton attributed her recurrent problem to either (1) seasonal allergies, or (2) vocal stress resulting from constant campaign speeches.
My next blog entry will discuss alternative explanation for her cough.
