13 May HILLARY CLINTON’S COUGH. I DO THE FORMER FIRST LADY’S RECURRENT COUGHING SPASMS IMPERIL HER AMBITION TO BE AMERICA’S FIRST WOMAN PRESIDENT.
During her October 2015 testimony before the House of Representatives Select Committee on the 2012 Benghazi attack, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was convulsed by spasmodic coughing. Although she recovered to complete her testimony, videos of the event were widely viewed both on television and on social media.
Since Mrs. Clinton commenced her public campaign for the presidency in January, 2016, her speeches and interviews have been interrupted by spasmodic coughing at least seven times. These are just the instances when her coughing was captured by a camera. Undoubtedly, the sum of her coughing episodes, both private and public, during the past five months is greater in number.
The implications of Ms. Clinton’s chronic cough are unknown. Is the cough merely a symptom of a mild medical issue, such as a seasonal allergy or a reaction to the constant talking, even shouting, by a campaigning politician? Or is it a sign of a severe and undisclosed health issue? Both Bill and Hillary Clinton over almost three decades have never been champions of transparency. Hence there is well-deserved wide speculation over the nature, cause, and political consequences of Hillary’s coughing. Innuendo is rampant.
This post will be the first of several to analyze this medical issue, which currently confronts former First Lady Hillary Clinton. Subsequent entries will document the recent episodes of coughing; the history and character of these spasms as clues to establishing a diagnosis; and the analyses of prominent physicians as to their nature.
