05 Jun Hillary Clinton – Too Sick to be President? III
Will Hillary Clinton release her medical records when she decides to run for the Presidency in 2016?
Most recent Democrat and Republican presidential nominees, with no public history of significant illness, have released summary letters from their physicians of record. During the 2008 campaign, candidate Barak Obama released a one-page statement written by Chicago physician Dr. David L. Scheiner. The 276-word letter claimed that Obama had a cholesterol level of 173, and that in the last 21 years, had only been treated for “upper respiratory infections, skin rashes and minor injuries.” Beyond this, Obama would not release his medical records and refused to even talk about the matter during the 2008 campaign.
Mitt Romney, President Obama’s Republican opponent in the 2012 campaign, also released a health statement. Boston physician Dr. Randall D. Gaz, the candidate’s personal physician for more than two decades, in a comprehensive letter to the public, summarized the results of Romney’s physical examination of August 9, 2012 as well as the patient’s personal and family medical history.
During the 2000 presidential campaign George W. Bush and his personal physician, Kenneth H. Cooper, responded to specific questions by NY Times medical reporter Dr. Lawrence Altman in separate telephone interviews. Their responses were printed in the Times. This author was unable to locate either a printed physician statement or a medical record release by candidate Bush.
Two recent candidates for the presidency, John McCain in 2008 and John Kerry in 2004 were far more forthcoming. Lingering questions over their medical suitability for the office compelled transparent and comprehensive responses. Senator McCain had been treated for a malignant melanoma of the face, and Senator Kerry underwent a prostatectomy for cancer of the prostate. Complicating Kerry’s situation were many questions about his Vietnam War experience and Purple Hearts for battle-related injuries.
McCain released his 1000 page plus complete medical record while Kerry, after prolonged equivocation, also released his entire medical record.
