18 Apr BARBARA BUSH. R.I.P.
Barbara Bush, the former First Lady of the United States, died on April 17, 2018.
Many well-deserved tributes for this remarkable lady will appear on cable, on broadcast news, and in print over the following days. Recollections and obituaries there will be far better written and more comprehensive than anything that could appear in this space. Thus I shall restrict any comments to a few matters.
Mrs. Bush was both the wife and the mother of a United States President. She was not unique in this feat. She was preceded by Abigail Adams two hundred years ago.
She was the fourth oldest surviving First Lady. She died at the age of 92 years 10 months.
Bess Truman was 97 years at death.
Nancy Reagan survived for 94 years 10 months.
Betty Ford lived for 93 years 2 months.
Rosalynn Carter remains in apparent good health @ 90 years 8 months.
Barbara Bush suffered from Graves’ Disease with exophthalmos during and after her White House years. In recent years she was treated for chronic heart and lung problems. The reported causes of her demise were Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart failure (CHF)
